Projects

Implemented projects:

1. Transformer

In August 1996 Centre HERA received the grant from the Holland Embassy (programs MARTA) for the conduct of the series of educating seminars for doctors in 7 regions of Russia. The project was named “Transformer”. The aim of the project was to inform specialists about the existing situation with STIs, including HIV/AIDS, to educate in the methods of work with different population groups on the prevention of the sexually transmitted infections. The total of 315 doctors have taken part in the seminars.

2. In November 1996 Centre HERA started the implementation of the one-year project called “The Unknown Epidemic”. The project have been implemented with financial support of pharmaceutical company GlaxoWellcome. It was aimed on the accompaniment of patients with HIV or the severe forms of genital herpes. The accent was made on the psychosocial and sexual problems of the patients with virus infections. The seminars took place in 15 regions of Russia on the basis of state AIDS-centers and non-commercial organizations working in the field of AIDS.

3. January, 1997 Centre HERA worked out the new project “The Unknown among the Known”, which was financed by the pharmaceutical company UPSA Laboratories. Target audience – the senior students of medical educational establishments of 8 regions of Russia. The aim of the project – to develop the communicative skills among the Doctor and the Patient.

4. March 1997 to December, 2000 we have conducted the project aimed on the hygienic education of adolescents of 7th to 11th grades of high-schools. The project was financed by Johnson and Johnson Foundation. During these 3 years more than 200 000 adolescents were involved in the project implementation.

5. November, 1997 we started the realization of the project “Creation of NGO and Education in the field of Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights”, financed by European Union – program Democracy. In the course of realization of the project 2 manuals were edited to help the newly-established NGOs and for the persons willing to create an NGO. The subjects of the manuals were: “Strategy Planning” and “Prevention Programs Management”.

6. April, 1998 the program “School for Young Mommy” was started in the regions of Russia. It was aimed to inform the women of reproductive age on the bases of contraception, family planning, reproductive health. The program was based on the strengthening of self-esteem of the women and educating them in reproductive rights. The financial support was granted by the company McNell.

7. 1998-2000 – the project financed by European Union in the framework of the program TACIS – LIEN “The Improvement of the Level of Knowledge in the Field of Reproductive Health Maintenance”. The project was aimed on the professionals dealing with the protection of health of population, as well as on the women of reproductive age and the youths. The seminars, trainings and Round tables for the district administrations were conducted in 4 regions of Russia, the series of the manuals were published for the professionals, leaflets, booklets and other informational materials were published for the broad population.

8. During the year 1999 the project “Medical Aspects of Domestic Violence” was implemented. The project was financed by the Ford Foundation. The aim of the project – to inform the doctors – gynecologists on the problem of domestic violence and its influence on the women’s reproductive health and to establish the links among the Women’s clinics and the Crisis Centers. The manual “Domestic Violence. Reproductive Health” was published.

9. In 2000 Centre HERA became the member of the Network for Reproductive Health Advocacy. In the framework of work of the network, with the financial support of USAID the Round Tables were conducted with the representatives of the State Duma, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor and Social protection. The aim of these events was to inform the decision-makers on the state level about the state of reproductive health of population.

10. In 2000-2001 the pilot project on the creation of the Hot-Line “Breast – Feeding” and “Contraception in the Postpartum Period”. The project was finance by UNFPA and the company ABBOTT Laboratories. The doctors who worked at the hot-lines were trained not only on the medical subjects, but also on the bases of phone counseling.


Current Project:

11. January 2002, the new project financed by the European Commission in the framework of TACIS – LIEN program had started – “Bridging the Gap Between New Sex Norms and Ignorance”. Target population – adolescents and youth. Besides the conduct of the seminars and trainings for regional NGOs working in the field of reproductive health protection, we decided to strengthen the project by the direct influence on the target auditory by the means of modern multimedia interactive techniques usage. In spite of the creation of the web-site, in the framework of the project implementation, we have prepared the Jingles CDs, videos and the leaflets for the adolescents. During the work out of the materials we collaborated with the students of Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy. With their help, we have created the texts for Jingles CD, plot of the video, the design of leaflets and web-site.

Besides the work with youth audience, in the implementation of these project we actively work with NGOs from 7 regions of Russia. The members of these NGOs have received the training on the strengthening of NGOs, advocacy, project cycle management, logical framework. In 2003 4 NGOs will receive the sub-grant for creation of prevention programs and for the conduct of Reproductive Health Vision Drawing Contest. After the conduct of the contest we are planning to edit the posters, aimed on the prevention of STIs, including HIV/AIDS, that were worked out by the target audience.

The pilot projects, having the best results, would be edited in the form of CDs for the distribution among the organizations concerned.
